Basal metabolic rate calculation
In 1919 J.A Harris e F. G. Benedict, with a study financed by the Carnegie Institution for Science, produced an equation to estimate the basal metabolic rate of a person.
The equation provides the calories intake necessary to maintain the person's weight.
On subjects with high muscle mass, the formula tends to underestimate the metabolic rate. Conversely, in people with a high fat mass, it tends to overestimate it.
